ULTRA LARGE Walnuts var Coble - VERY VERY RARE
Have some of these amongst your normal Almonds and Hazelnuts on display.
They can then be eaten, but can also be used as seed to grow into a similar walnut tree.
These are at least double the size of a normal walnut, and can weigh 52 grams when gathered.
It is hardy to zone 5. It flowers in June, and the nuts ripen in October. The flowers are pollinated by the Wind. The plant is self-fertile.
The kernels are eaten raw or used in confections, cakes, ice cream, etc, with a delicious flavour.
When grown, the dormant plant is very cold-tolerant, tolerating temperatures down to about -27°C without serious damage, but the young spring growth is rather tender and can be damaged by late frosts.
The leaves have a very pleasant aroma.
Why not be a Guerrilla gardener, plant a few in some untended ground, and reap the benefits later on in their maturity?
You will have to store them in a cool place until sowing them directly into the ground or into pots in the spring. At all times, protect from vermin.
